The Log Luxury by HONKA / A Residence

The “copper lake area” is a high-end residential area developed by the log house brand HONKA, and is located in the forest that extends in a suburb of St. Petersburg, Russia. 45 log houses made by HONKA stand in the 320,000 m² forest.
One of the log houses, the A residence, is a 2-story house with a basement designed by Sergey Rogulev, a Russian architect. He mixed hard materials such as granite, glass, and metal with the logs and created 450 m² space 3 dimensionally. To highlight the difference between the texture and color of the different materials, he painted the logs dark brown. The terrace, which is made of granite, surrounds the house on the ground floor, and adds accent to the exterior. In all the rooms, the dark brown logs are used for the walls; sun comes in from the glass door that connects each room to the terrace. On the ground floor, the living room, dining room, kitchen and study room surround the see-through elevator, creating a circular movement in the house. The living room is a giant space and reveals the slanted ceiling created by the gable roof, creating a 5.9m ceiling height at the highest point. Also, a 1.8 m stone fireplace and 2 chimneys add dynamism to the space.

LUCA NICHETTO

Luca Nichetto is an Italian designer designing various products from furniture and lighting to vases and water basins. During Milano Salone 2012, he presented new designs from 13 brands.
He was born in Murano Islnad, the island famous for its Venetian glass. He majored in product design at the University Institute of Architecture Venice and started working for Salviati studio, famous for its Venetian glass, before graduation. His initial work MILLEBOLLE, a vase that has air bubbles inside the glass, became a bestseller of the brand. His design policy is to create a new value as a designer that connects the brand to the market. The new sofa of Cassina “LA MISE” is a sofa that answered a clear yet difficult need: creating the same size and proportion as the famous MARALUNGA, a sofa designed by Vico Magistretti, and add a new charm. In contrast to MARALUNGA, which is made for production by designing the mechanism, he focused on the textile so that the man’s natural movement itself becomes the beautiful creation, and created a comfortable sofa in which the arm fully surrounds the body.
He thinks that the eco-friendly design will be wanted in future designs. Starting in 2011, he started working in Stockholm in addition to his studio in Italy, seeking a furniture design that can be used for a long time.

Next House Complex / Tila

Tila is a 6-story concrete-framed apartment that stands in the Arabianranta district of a redevelopment area in Helsinki, Finland. There are 39 units mainly 50 m² or 102 m² floor space, which are designed in the “skeleton infill method” where the building frame, installation and interior are designed separately.
Each unit is sold with 1 or 2 bathrooms and other the other areas of the interior are left untouched. Thus, the residents can freely design the layout of the kitchen or plan the other rooms to their liking. The ceiling height is 4.7m to 5m high, and a steel structure is placed at the 2.5m level, so that a mezzanine floor can be created. The flat-slab structure is selected so that there are no beams in the units, and water and air-conditioning facilities are all placed in the outside hallway, maximizing the freedom of design. The architect Pia Ilonen who designed this apartment says “ the resident can live in the unit for a long time as the interior can be changed according to the lifestyle of the family.” The penthouse Pia lives in with her 2 daughters has a mezzanine floor on the north side and a loft on the south side separating the 2 daughters’ rooms. In between the 2 rooms is the void of the living room and dining room, which creates a feeling of 2 small houses facing each other. The building’s exterior wall is finished with tiles and bricks but because the penthouse was instructed to use different material due to urban planning, pinewood was used in the part of the 6th floor exterior wall as an accent of the exterior design.

Next House Complex / BREEZE

BREEZE is an apartment that stands 5 minutes from the station. It’s located 5km from Shibuya and is closest to the Setagaya area of central Tokyo. The area is a quiet residential area, but because the front road is a bypass road, it is noisy especially during rush hour in the morning and evening. The giant dynamic RC wall was created to moderate the noise, and its form is somewhat artistic as it curves toward the outside. The RC wall and the exterior wall of the building create a double façade and the entrance is hidden in between them. The giant RC wall was the resolution to having the parking on the ground floor and creates a space in front of the entrance on the 2nd floor.
A giant opening was created toward the south side, and a very open and extensive space was created in the interior in contrast to the closed exterior image of the apartment. The land is 915 m², and the floor space is 1251 m². The building has 8 rental units both 1floor below ground, and 3 floors above ground. Each unit is about 110 m² to 121 m². The ground floor is a flat unit, and 2nd and 3rd floors are 2-story units. Kotaro Ide is the architect and the owner, and has done everything from purchasing the land, designing the building and planning the business scheme. Materials were selected based on durability with regard to cost to minimize maintenance. The exterior thermal insulation was selected for the purpose of refreshing the exterior wall from time to time. Also, heat pumps and under-floor air conditioning systems were selected to create a well-insulated space with humidified and clean air, to achieve a comfortable air environment.
