Garden Senses / T residence

The owner of T residence in Nerima, Tokyo bought a 6.6m X 15m area of land that stretches east to west on the north side of their home. To create a vegetable garden and an annex to enjoy the hanging scrolls and art, the owner asked Style is Still Living (who designs both the garden and architecture) to create an original garden for all 3 members of the family to enjoy. The biggest challenge was to create both openness and privacy, and to maintain balance with the concrete-wall residence. The garden designer Kayoko Nagahama and interior designer Toshihiko Saito imagined a small tent-like space in the green and proposed a 26sq.m annex. What added a twist to the situation was the desire to have green on the roof and the wall that curves together on the west side. A wildflower mat was laid on the roof part and vines, herbs and perennials were plated on the double layered non-woven material on the wall part. Sand moss (which is strong enough to withstand western sunlight), a water laver made from scraping a big rock and an antique brick create a unique atmosphere in the western garden. On the east side, a deck terrace that overlooks the vegetable garden with a swing was created. And on both ends of the terrace, Prunus incisa and maple were planted with the vegetable and herb garden in the center. By designing both the annex and the garden together, a balanced view from both the inside and outside of the home, and a unique space that balances the environment was created.
