GARDEN FEEL / H residence
The H residence is a beautifully balanced architecture with both south and north gardens that stands in Mitaka, Tokyo. The couple H moved to Mitaka to give their children access to the schools in the area and asked architect Soichi Yamazaki to design their house. Mr.Yamazaki surrounded the 342.34sq.m land facing the road on the east side with 2.4m walls to maintain their privacy and created gardens full of greens on both the north and south sides. The couple, who lived in Paris and Boston, asked for a bathroom in the main bedroom, ample backyard space, high ceilings and a dignified interior. Mr. Yamazaki proposed the living room and dining room on the 1st floor and the family’s bedrooms and bathrooms on the 2nd floor, separating the private and public zones by the floor levels. He also created a functional space, carefully planning the circulation and storage areas. As a contrast to the hard image exterior, the impression of the interior is soft because of the wood on the walls. The dining room on the west side of the hall and the living room on the south side are circularly connected, and the ample kitchen has the pantry and food storage at the far end. The 2850mm ceiling height creates spaciousness and the Italian ceramic tile floor and the concrete walls with the accent of cherry wood panels create a luxurious impression. The 2 differently designed gardens on the south and north side add charm to this qualified house. The changing color of maple and japanese-zelkova leaves can be enjoyed in the south garden which also brings unity to the living room. The 2nd floor hall is a bright space, which the family calls“ the children’s living room.” The main bedroom and private bathroom were planned at the far end of the hall like a hotel. On the other hand, a family bathroom with a jet bath was planned next to the children’s room. The wife happily comments that each private space is smaller than their previous home, but the family gathers more in the common spaces with this new house. The H residence’s careful selection of everything from materials to the trees, soundly nurtures the family’s life.
