VALUES OF HIGH END
N residence is located in Shibuya, Tokyo. The 4-story building is designed by the architect, Jun Watanabe, following the owner’s request toward a single structure consisting of the owner’s unit and the additional rental unit. Under the shadow controlling regulation, the building height was very highly regulated, so the building was cantilevered to provide parking space underneath for 3 cars. This allowed for maximizing the floor space of the floors above and has structured the volume and façade of the building.
The reinforced concrete structural building has resulted in, having a rental unit on the 1st and 2nd basement floors, and the owner’s residence on the 1st and 2nd floors. From the staircase (which became the core structure of the building), the solid 300mm concrete slabs were extended in 4 directions with the randomly located supporting walls. This structural method is effective in maximizing the ceiling height within the height regulation.
Public living & dining areas as well as a private living & dining kitchen were placed on the 1st floor, and the main bedroom, children’s rooms and bathroom are on the 2nd floor. The dining kitchen positioned in the center of the building separated the public and private space, placing the public space on the north side and the private space on the south side. On the south side, the family living room was placed facing the roof balcony. In contrast, the public living & dining rooms on the north side became a formal space decorated with Chinoiserie furniture. The rooms are visible from the staircase and hallway through the unique wall made from 3D tiles with holes.
