As Japanese residences have a short history in tiles compared to Europe and the United States, the use of tile and its designs were once limited to bathrooms, powder rooms and kitchens. However, in the last 10 years, tiles have been slowly used for the floors and the walls of living rooms, dining rooms, and hallways. When the big 600mm x 600mm sized tiles are used, it makes a space feel larger and there are some examples where you can see a high level of design. Tiles have been incorporated into material suitable for residences, and its most noteworthy characteristic is that tiles are standardized industrial products, having a texture of ceramic ware. As part of the process of making tiles from raw materials of clay, patterns and designs are added. It's possible to finish it up in various textures such as imitating natural materials like stone or wood. At the same time, tiles possess qualities of strength and durability and are easy to clean. Lately, there has been remarkable progress in tiles so that they are equipped with antibacterial and antifouling functions. Currently, each manufacturer sells extensive lines of products and the selection has widely increased.
In this article, we will start by discussing the history of tiles and culminate with the preliminary knowledge of the kinds of tile established by the current Japanese Industrial Standards(JIS)and the actual construction techniques. Moreover, we will further categorize the suitable areas for tile usage: bathrooms, sinks, toilets, living room floors and walls, entrances, driveways, terraces, balconies, swimming pools, ponds, and water basins. We will explore the ways to incorporate tiles for these places in a residence, and show some examples. As for the tiles designs and devices, we will look at every possible angle pertaining to the kinds of textures, laying methods and the latest trend for tile products.
