Close-up Designer Hiroyuki Matsunaka

Interior designer Hiroyuki Matsunaka had established a café called "café.co" with its own architectural design office, with his three other friends in 1996. This new form of café had received a lot of attention from its creators based in Minami, Osaka. When the design office got off the ground, Matsunaka wanted to get involved in the wide spectrum of designs, and launched his own architectural and interior design office called "designroom 702" in 2004.
Matsunaka makes his first priority the success of the shop he designs so he doesn't unify his design style to win himself a good reputation. To create a popular space where people get together, he gets inspiration from cutting-edge fashion ideas rather than interior design and art, which is incorporated into his work.
On the contrary, Matsunaka's own residence is different from the commercial space where prosperity is desired. Therefore, he placed only his favorite items in his residence. He wanted his residence to be like an atelier that was remodeled from a warehouse. He renovated the factory/residence in the 1960s and maintained its "old building" feel which has lasted generations. In his residence, he coordinated antiques that he purchased in European countries as well as India, in addition to the originally designed furniture. He possesses a sharp and sophisticated eye that helps him determine authenticity, so even though his unique items are from different countries and genres, they integrate superbly. This is apparent in both the commercial space and in his residence and can be output only by him.
