Yamaguchi Residence exists in a quiet residential area which is about 30 minutes away from the center of Fukuoka prefecture in Kyushu district. The building's height itself had to be under 10m below the legal regulation. Considering overcrowded Japanese urban area with houses, aluminum louver functioning as a blind was established and it's also acting as an accent for the design of the house.
The owner had a wish to live in the house where you can feel a touch of "western" blended in the "oriental(Japanese)". While integrating the owner's wish, an architect, Masakatsu Matsuyama designed the house. Matsuyama tried to incorporate a lot of materials that would remind something "Japanese" in every place such as plaster finished walls blended with bamboo to match with the tea room and Japanese garden and he also placed a number of Japanese traditional arts and antiques that the owner had been collecting. On the other hand, living room was unified in one basic color, black and the marble was set in the walls. By this, the space was able to have some kind of "western" atmosphere and the intention was to possess some contrast to the house as a whole.
Moreover, living room , dining room and the bedroom which are all required
functions for leading a daily life, were all located on the second floor. Other extra
rooms are located on the first and the third floor. You can view the garden from
anywhere on the second floor and can enjoy the transition of four seasons.
